Play A Dark Room online

Play A Dark Room in your browser. Light the fire, gather supplies and uncover a minimalist text adventure, with mobile controls and local save guidance.

Open the game to begin.

Help

P or Escape pauses a running attempt. Pause first when you want to read the guide or explore the pictures beside the player. Fullscreen enlarges the same embedded window; returning from fullscreen keeps that window. The score and speed indicators remain part of the board. Sound can be muted from the speaker control.

Leaving or restarting can lose unsaved progress. Save in the game first.

Start with the fire, without a story spoiler

A Dark Room begins with a cold room and one useful action: light the fire. Read the changing room description and the notification log after each action. The opening deliberately gives you very little to manage. A button with a cooling bar is waiting for its next use; it does not need another page refresh. Keep the fire going and let the early events unfold before looking for a map or a large list of upgrades.

From a single action to a resource plan

New actions and locations arrive as the situation changes. When gathering and building become available, compare the cost of the next upgrade with the supplies you need to keep available. Use the log to understand what changed rather than pressing every new button immediately. The outside area, crafting and later expeditions are parts of the same run. This guide avoids revealing the ending so that the sparse text can do its work.

Read and tap comfortably on a phone

The hosted browser edition uses readable text and tap targets rather than a virtual joystick. On narrow screens, controls and resource panels stack inside the game; scroll within that window when the run exposes more information. The fullscreen icon expands the same game window. Turn your phone to compare the views without starting over. Some later scenes contain denser information than the opening, so use the game’s own menus and take time to read the choices.

Keep your run when you return

This copy keeps its game state in this browser under a game-specific storage key. A favourite saves the page link; it is not a backup of your run. Use the game’s export option before clearing website data or moving to another browser. An existing save on the original developer’s domain is separate and is not imported automatically. The same hosted run can be reopened in another interface language, but keep one active tab to avoid competing saves.

The browser edition and its source

This is the open-source browser game by Michael Townsend and doublespeak games, not a claim to include the separate commercial mobile or Steam editions. RadiantGames hosts an adapted copy under MPL-2.0 with a responsive layout, local dependencies and isolated storage. The original project, license and complete adapted source are linked below. No account is needed for this hosted edition.
