What does the original Paladin start with?
Consecration is the starting spell recorded in Aethus’s original character picker. Our 21 October menu check showed v0.106.0 (414af44c), a Human Paladin with 245 displayed health, empty equipment slots and 0 of 51 talent points spent. This is a menu reading, not a measured clear rate or a promise about a later patch.
The class description points towards holy ground, hammers, healing and recovery from a lethal situation. Those themes do not mean a new character begins with every shield or recovery talent. Start by understanding the spell you actually have. Guide names such as Protection Paladin describe a direction to develop; they are not a complete starting loadout.
Choose upgrades for the problem in front of you
Before accepting a card, compare its effect with what is failing in the current run. More damage is useful when enemies survive your useful damage area. A defensive choice has a different job: giving you enough time or space to reach the next safe opening. The following checklist is a way to compare offers, not a guaranteed sequence of cards.
| What you notice | What to inspect in the next offer | What to compare next |
|---|---|---|
| The pack keeps growing | Damage, coverage or frequency for an attack you already use | Whether a route through the next wave stays open |
| You take contact damage while turning | A relevant defensive or recovery effect, alongside a wider movement route | Whether you can finish the turn without another hit |
| A durable target outlasts the wave | An available attack that can reach that target reliably | Whether you keep dealing damage while avoiding its attack |
| The guide’s named card never appears | The function you need, rather than only a particular name | Whether an offered alternative solves the same obstacle |
A useful early build has a damage source that matters and enough safety to keep using it. Spreading every choice across unrelated new effects can leave the main attack underdeveloped; taking only damage can also fail if you cannot survive long enough for it to work. Decide from the available card and the current situation rather than following a fixed shopping list.
Protection, Holy and Retribution: check your own progression
Inspect the talent panel before trying to reproduce a developed Paladin setup. Read the prerequisite, required points and actual effect of a talent in your client. A recording made with substantial permanent progression is not a fresh-character benchmark. A shield interaction, healing effect or death-prevention effect should only enter your plan after confirming that you have unlocked it.
Use the same care with equipment. Compare what is equipped, what is available and which failure you are trying to address. Do not assume that a guide’s named item is required before your next attempt. If you change talents, equipment, race and upgrade priorities together, you will have little evidence about which change helped. Keeping most conditions similar makes the next comparison more useful.
Move the fight through your useful damage
A ground-damage opener asks you to think about where the pack will be, not only where it is now. Plan a route that lets approaching enemies pass through useful damage while leaving room to turn. Standing still because a damage area is visible can turn a manageable group into a closed ring. If the route closes, change the route before interpreting the result as a damage-only problem.
For a boss or another durable enemy, separate two questions: can an attack reach it consistently, and can you avoid its response? An upgrade that clears small enemies faster may not solve the second question. After a failed attempt, note whether you ran out of health, space or useful damage against the target; then compare one relevant adjustment.
Why does another guide say Hammer of Wrath?
The original browser game and community reconstructions are separate clients. A class name does not establish that their starting spells, talent trees, equipment or balance are identical. The original-menu reading used here starts Paladin with Consecration. If another source describes a ranged Hammer of Wrath opener, check which client and date it covers before mixing its advice into this plan.
This page does not prescribe a numerical damage ranking, an optimal talent allocation or a mandatory item-farming route. It gives a fresh-run decision framework tied to a dated original-menu observation. When your menu differs, use its current spell and talent descriptions rather than forcing an old sequence onto the new version.
Return with one decision to test
Choose Paladin, confirm the starting spell, and decide what you want the next upgrade to improve. Use the class-choice guide if you are still comparing playstyles, or the Warrior guide for a close-range alternative. The builds overview provides the wider upgrade context. A blank screen or graphics warning needs launch help, not a different talent allocation.
